I was born and raised in the greener parts of Fremantle, the
middle of 3 children to a strong-spirited Japanese mother and left-winged
Aussie father. My interests stem from this upbringing – all things
nature-related, art, food, drink and travel, all while attempting to keep fit
and healthy!
In 2009 I graduated from Murdoch University with a Bachelors in
veterinary medicine and have been in the clinical field since, working first in
emergency medicine and then in general practice.
I left Perth in 2014 to travel Europe with my music teacher
boyfriend, whilst also discovering “big city life” – living and working in
London. After 2 years and 20+ countries, it was time to return home just to a
more settled life. Ironically, I have found myself back at my old roots;
working casually at the Murdoch Uni teaching vet hospital and surrounded by the
familiar sounds of vet student life.
Although I have never done any formal teaching, over the years I
have worked closely with and mentored many vet and vet nurse students on their
practical experience. My previous work place combined a fully-fledged nursing
college and I was drawn towards their style of hands-on work-place training. I
have always really enjoyed the teaching aspect of my role as a practicing
veterinarian, which is why I have decided to steer my career towards one in
education.
Hello Julia
ReplyDeleteThank you for introducing yourself. It looks like we have a lot in common (except that I am quite a few years older than you). I was raised in the Western suburbs of Sydney by a very strong-willed mother and both my Mother and Father were staunch left-wing Aussies :) My Father was a waterside worker and my Mother was a member of the Women's Auxiliary WWF union. Both deceased now :(
I also travelled around Europe in my mid-late 20's :) and I have done a lot of travelling since. I just came back from a conference in Canada. Have you been to Canada yet?
As you work on Murdoch campus, maybe we can catch up for morning or afternoon tea once the semester gets started. I am usually on campus on Mon, Thurs & sometimes Fri.
I look forward to learning and chatting with you online.
Best wishes, Jenni
Hi Jenni,
DeleteThank you so much for your response! This is my first time studying externally and I am finding it all rather daunting, so I am glad to hear from you :)
It sounds like life has taken you to many wonderful places and with many interesting and influential characters. I am sorry to hear that your parents are now deceased.
Unfortunately, I am yet to see Canada, but it does feature quite high on my bucket list (...as does other parts of the Americas... And Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, NZ and Antartica. As you can see, I have a rather virulent form of the "travel bug"!)
I am at uni quite frequently so would love to catch up for a coffee sometime soon, probably either Monday or Thursday. I will keep in touch!
Julia
P.S. I have to admit, I am terrible at social media - I haven't checked my Twitter account since 2009!
Thanks for sharing. I am a Eurasian myself. My mother is from Hong Kong and my father from the UK. I look forward to reading more from you.
ReplyDeleteHi AlanC,
DeleteThanks for your comment :) One of the things I have found so great about this course so far is the huge diversity in students' backgrounds, their education and fields of study and their general interests. It certainly keeps things interesting and opens ones mind to new perspectives! Are you residing in Asia or the UK now?
Julia
Hi Julia, i too left to see the wide world after my first stint at university and like you i ended up back wehere i started. I look forward to hearing more from you.
ReplyDeleteHi MissK E,
DeleteIt's funny how that happens; we always seem to end up where we started :) I have to admit, I am enjoying the familiarity of Murdoch student life. Where did you travel to?
Julia
